Talented DevOps engineers will be in their element using specialised tools to implement various process stages. Whether creating chef cookbooks, using source code management systems, or demonstrating proficiency with bug management and artifacts/configuration management systems, you’ll be confident deploying and managing services. With a good knowledge of Linux, UNIX or Windows fundamentals, those in DevOps jobs will be no stranger to working on continuous integration.

Alongside their understanding of the core platforms (including Linux, Microsoft and hybrid), it’s vital that DevOps engineers possess basic shell scripting skills – proficiency in a program like Bash, for instance, will be extremely helpful. The ability to produce good clean code, in (for example) Python, Perl or Ruby, and the comprehensive understanding of formats like XML, INI, JSON and YAML are often essential.
